South America General Description

Occupying approximately 3.5% of the earth’s surface and ranked fourth largest in terms of area, after Asia, Africa and North America, South America is a continent bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

While Roman Catholicism is practiced by a majority of the people, there is a substantial number of Hindu and Muslim people in Guyana and Suriname. While Spanish is the official language of South Americans, nearly 51% of the people speak Portuguese, the official language of Brazil.
