Venezuela

If you find yourself sitting in a pub and sipping a drink called "chichi", a local alcoholic beverage, you are most likely to be in Venezuela, officially known as the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This country is in the northern part of South America. It is bordered by water bodies like the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean and countries like Colombia, Brazil and Guyana.

There are seventy-two islands which are all part of the republic. Margarita Island is the largest of the Venezuelan islands and Caracas is the capital city. Other major cities are Barquisimeto, Maracaibo and Valencia.

It took nearly three hundred years after the initial settlement of the Spanish, for Venezuela to become independent. Initially Venezuela was part of the Republic of Gran Colombia along with Colombia, Ecuador and Panama. The republic was subsequently dissolved in 1830.

There was a time in the early 20th century when Venezuela was number one in the world in oil exports. Though the fall in oil prices changed history for the country, Venezuela’s petroleum industry is still the country’s most important economic contributor. This industry however can not employ too many people. Industries which are big employers include hydropower, coal, gold, iron ore, steel, aluminum, construction materials, motor vehicle assembly, textiles and food processing. Agricultural products are corn, sorghum, rice, sugarcane, coffee, bananas, vegetables, beef, pork and dairy products.

Venezuela has a rich cultural heritage. Be it music or literature, Venezuela has its own tradition. For example, the indigenous styles in music, joropo dance music and Venezuelan calypso, are known to many parts of the world. There are many political leaders who are renowned authors as well. For example, Simon Bolivar, the leader of the War of Independence and Romulo Gallegos, a novelist, who became President of Venezuela.

Arepas is the name of pancakes made from ground corn or wheat. These are very popular in Venezuela; they are filled with cheese, eggs or meat. Then, meat is an important part of Venezuelan cuisine. It is cooked in a variety of ways and used as an ingredient for filling empanadas. Seafood is also available in plenty.
