Suriname
Located in the northern section of South America, Suriname is a republic which has countries like Guyana, the French Guiana and Brazil along its borders. It also has the North Atlantic Ocean beside it. Paramaribo is the capital city and Suriname's main port. Most of Suriname’s surface area is covered with rainforests. The Central Suriname Nature Reserve, one of the ten largest tropical forest reserves in the region, has been declared a World Heritage site in 2000. Then there is the Brownsberg Nature Park, which is the country's National Park. These two places are of great interest to tourists.
After the British colonists who settled in Suriname in the first half of the seventeenth century, Suriname came under Dutch rule. Complete independence from the Dutch was earned in 1975.
Bauxite mining is the mainstay of Suriname economy. Not only does it contribute to the country’s GDP, but brings healthy export earnings too. Other industries are gold mining, oil, timber, fishing and food processing. Agriculture also contributes towards the country’s economy and it includes bananas, coconuts, palm kernels, plantains, peanuts and rice. Eco-tourism is considered to be the sunshine industry in Suriname.
In terms of architectural styles, you can see a lot of Dutch influence in its monuments and old buildings.
While Dutch is the official language, English is widely spoken. Other languages include Sranantongo (Surinamese), Sarnami Hindustani and Suriname Javanese.
Nearly half of the population is Christians. There is a strong presence of Hindus and Muslims as well.
The Suriname food is a combo of various influences - Amerindian, Chinese, Creole, European, Indian and Indonesian. Soups are made from chicken and peanuts. Chicken and rice is a staple dish. Indian rotis are popular. Salted fish is eaten with hot pepper sauce. Vegetables include cassava, cabbage, green beans, plantains, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.
