The south Pacific ocean is also part of its borders. Lima is the capital of Peru. Other major cities include Arequipa, Callao, Trujillo, and Chiclayo.

Other than the powerful Amazon, the other rivers that flow through Peru are Maranon, Huallaga and Ucayali. With regard to the natural topography of Peru, the country has everything from coastal plain, mountains to rainforests. The climate is equally divergent – it varies from dry and mild on the coast, temperate to extremely cold in the Andes, and hot and humid in the rainforest.

The World Heritage sites, which are part of early civilizations, in Peru are Huascaran National Park, Manu National Park, Rio Abiseo National Park and the historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. It is also the most well known Peruvian archaeological site. Known as the The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu has a picturesque landscape. Located on the eastern slopes of the Andes, its walls and terraces blend effortlessly with the natural environment. Though damaged severely by earthquakes, the colonial structures in Lima, the Spanish capital of South America, have been restored and named as a world heritage site.
