The Republic of Panama is a Central American country which is situated between Colombia and Costa Rica. There are two seas beside it, the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are joined by the Panama canal. The capital of Panama is the Panama City. There are two other important cities – Colon and David.
Panama was under Spanish colonial rule for nearly three centuries – ever since they settled in the country from the early part of sixteenth century. Then in 1821 Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela formed the Republic of Gran Colombia, which lasted till 1830 when Colombia and Panama formed the state of Nueva Granada. After a civil war, which lasted between 1899 and 1903, Panama became an independent country. The United States had gained the rights to construct the Panama Canal in 1903. It was during the dictatorial regime of General Omar Torrijos Herrera (1929-1981), the Canal was handed back to Panama.
Panama has tropical climate. It rains between May and January. The country has 500 rivers flowing through it. If archeological sites are of any interest to you, then you aught to make a trip to see the fortifications on the Caribbean side of Panama, called the Portobelo-San Lorenzo. These fortresses were built by the Spanish, as a way to defend the country.
