Ever since gold was discovered in Guyana, it has been the most talked-about point regarding the country. The Omai gold mine is the biggest gold mine in the entire South America. The only English speaking country in South America, the co-operative republic of Guyana is located next to Venezuela. The other countries bordering it are Suriname and Brazil.
With Georgetown as the capital, the other large cities in Guyana include Linden and New Amsterdam. The earliest settlers in Guyana were the Arawak and Carib tribes. Then came the Dutch who made colonies in the country – with sugar and coffee plantations. The country also was colonized by the French and the British. Later in 1831, the country became a fully British colony till 1961 when it gained autonomy. Independence was declared in 1966 and in 1970 the country became a republic within the commonwealth.
The tropical climate Guyana has two rainy seasons in a year. Because of the varied settlers in Guyana, the languages used in the country are English, Amerindian dialects, Creole, Hindi and Urdu. While half of the population are Christians, the other half is divided into Hindus and Muslims, with Hindus holding a higher percentage.
Food habits of any country is a reflection of its people. Because Guyana is a combination of many cultures, the cuisine is also mixed. The American tastes are reflected through Cassava bread and pepper pot stew; the African influence through metagge (vegetable dumplings); the Indians are represented through curries and rotis and chow mein is Chinese. One of the most popular dishes in Guyana is rice with beans, vegetables and chicken or any other meat. Shell fish like shrimps and fish like snappers are also eaten. Mauby is a soft drink that is very popular, is made from the bark of a tree. Beer and rum are produced locally.
Like other tropical countries there are plenty of fruits like bananas, coconuts, guavas, mangoes, oranges, papayas, passion fruits, pineapples, sapodillas and water melons available throughout Guyana.
