Guatemala
Did you know that Football is the most popular sport in Guatemala followed by baseball, basketball and volleyball? Even Bicycle racing takes place in many towns and cities.
The Republic of Guatemala is located in Central America. Mexico, Belize, the Gulf of Honduras (Caribbean Sea), Honduras, El Salvador and the North Pacific Ocean are all its neighbors. Guatemala City is the capital and a city called Quetzaltenango is an important commercial centre. Guatemala has many world heritage sites:
Tikal National Park, situated in the Guatemalan forest, is a mixture of Mayan archaeological wonders and the natural environment.
While Tikal was inhabited from the sixth century BC to the tenth century AD, Quirigua, which was inhabited from the second century AD, contains a number of eighth century Mayan monuments.
Antigua, is a Colonial town belonging to the sixteenth century. Although badly dilapidated by the 1773 earthquake, many precious monuments have been restored.
The Maya, who are the original inhabitants of Guatemala, make up around half of the population. While majority of the people speak Spanish, there are some Amerindian languages also spoken. The main Mayan languages are Quiche, Cakchiquel, Mam and Kekchi. Though there are many Guatemalans who are Roman Catholics, in some areas, Mayan and Catholic beliefs are combined.
Maize and beans are primary foods in Guatemala. Cornmeal tortillas with beans and filled tamales make popular meals. Soups, stews and egg dishes are also eaten.
Guatemala is a member of the US-Central America Free Trade Agreement. It is estimated that majority of the population live below the poverty line.
The main agricultural produces include coffee, sugar and bananas. Other crops are beans, cacao, cardamom, corn and chicle gum (used to make chewing gum). Industries include petroleum, chemicals, metals, timber, rubber, furniture, textiles, clothing and sugar. Tourism is showing a healthy growth in Guatemala.
