El Salvador
The Central American republic of El Salvador is bordered by Guatemala, Honduras, the Gulf of Fonseca and the North Pacific Ocean. San Salvador is the name of the capital of El Salvador. Other major cities include Santa Ana and San Miguel.
The land area in El Salvador is very mountainous, barring a narrow coastal region and a plateau in the center. Rio Lempa is the name of the major river.
The country of El Salvador is prone to earthquakes. That is the reason why today’s modern buildings are all made with earthquake resistant designs and materials. If you wish to get a glimpse into the ancient Maya civilization, you could make a trip to one of the most important archeological sites in El Salvador - Tazumal. The site, near Santa Ana, was an early Mayan settlement, later inhabited by the Pipil people.
Another interesting place to visit is the Mayan village called Joya de Ceren. Like the Pompeii, this village was also buried by a volcanic eruption in 600 AD. The remains - houses and possessions provide an insight into the lives of the inhabitants. Joya de Ceren is on the World Heritage list.
Agriculture and industry make similar contributions to the economy of El Salvador. While agricultural products are beans, coffee, corn, oilseed, rice, sorghum, sugarcane, poppy and sesame seeds, tropical fruits and dairy products, major industries are petroleum, chemicals, fertilizer, light metals, construction equipment, product assembly, furniture, textiles, clothing, food processing and beverages.
Much of the country’s economy is boosted by the money sent by Salvadorans working abroad.
While Spanish is the official language in El Salvador, another language called Nahuat, originally belonging to the Pilpil people, is also spoken widely. Staple diet of Salvadorians in are beans, rice, tortillas and tamales. Pupusas are tortillas with fillings, such as meat, cheese, and refried beans. Pasteles, meat filled turnovers, are also eaten.
