Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for its rugged countryside and coastal plains. Located in Central America, it is close to Nicaragua and the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean lie next to it. While San Jose is the capital city, other important cities include Alajuela, Limon and Puntarenas. There are a lot of volcanoes towards the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

After Christopher Columbus visited Costa Rica in 1502, it took nearly 60 years for Cartago, Costa Rica's first Colonial city, to be established. The land was ruled by the Spanish for nearly three hundred years, till 1821 when the country gained independence. Then along with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, Costa Rica became a member of the United Provinces of Central America. Independence was finally earned in 1838. Before bananas, coffee was one of the most important money earners for Costa Rica. Soon the efforts expanded to other areas like transport – especially railways.

Costa Rica has been one of the most strong and stable countries in Central America. One of the most well-known Costa Ricans is a man called Oscar Arias Sanchez, who in 1987 entered into a peace pact with adjoining countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. He later won the Nobel Peace Prize.

While Spanish is the official language in Costa Rica, large section of the population also speaks English. Most people in Costa Rica are Christians.

Agriculture no longer provides the sole economic support for Costa Rica. The country has successfully developed the tourism and technology sectors as well. While the agricultural products are bananas, beans, coffee, corn, pineapples, potatoes, rice, sugar and beef, the industrial sector include timber, construction materials, fertilizer, microprocessors, plastic goods, leather crafts, woodwork, textiles, clothing and food processing.

Cuisine in Costa Rica is a delectable combination of indigenous Central American, Spanish and Afro-Caribbean recipes. Staple foods include tortillas, rice, and beans. Other foods eaten are eggs, cheese, chicken, beef and fish. Maize, breadfruit, cassava, plantains, peppers, sweet potatoes and tomatoes are available.
