While Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, large sections of the population speak English, French and Spanish. Because of the strong legacy left behind by the Portuguese, Brazil is the only non-Spanish speaking country in South America. While there were nearly 1000 languages spoken at one time, today, it has reduced to around 170 languages spoken by approximately 200 odd tribes living in Brazil.
When it comes to industrialization, Brazil is considered to be the most highly industrialized country in Latin America and in 2000 was the world's eighth largest in terms of economy. The sectors where Brazil is strong are steel, car production, aircraft and vehicles and hydroelectric power. Its exports include high technology aviation components and civilian aircraft. Brazil is also rich in natural resources like bauxite, gold, iron ore, manganese, nickel, phosphates, platinum, tin and uranium. Coffee is still Brazil’s major export. It is no wonder then that Brazilians themselves drink a lot of this beverage. Called cafezinho, it is one of the most popular drinks in Brazil.
