After Spanish rule for nearly three hundred years, when Bolivia was part of Peru, the country went into war with Chile between 1879 and 1884. The outcome of the war was that Bolivia lost the coastal territory to Chile. That is when it became land-locked. It is bordered by Chile, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. La Paz is the location of governmental administration and Sucre is the location of the Supreme Court. Other major cities include Santa Cruz and Cochabamba.

Bolivia is famous for its numerous national parks and protected areas. Madidi National Park, founded in 1995, is said to be one of the world's largest reserves.
