This commonwealth country was earlier known as British Honduras. The name changed to Belize in 1973. This Central American country, bordered by Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, earned its independence in 1981. Belmopan is the capital city of Belize.

The service industry of Belize, especially in the tourism sector, is the biggest money earner for the country. Employing nearly twenty seven percent of labor force this sector is the biggest earner of foreign currency. The agricultural sector is also an equally good earner. There are many languages in use in Belize - English, Spanish, Mayan, Garifuna (Carib) and Creole.

The Belize cuisine is influenced by many ethnic groups. Of course influence of Mexico and other Caribbean islands is most pronounced. Rice, bean, meat and fish stews are common. People of Belize love hot sauces. A meal would include tortillas and a typical lunch would have meat pies, chicken filled tamales, and conch fritters. Fruit juice and locally produced beer (Belikin) and rum are very popular.

People of Belize love to have fun. Carnivals and festivals of music and dance are held at various times throughout the year. Football, basketball, volleyball and baseball are very popular with the people of Belize.
