The Dutch were the first Europeans to visit Tonga and Captain Cook, the British navigator, arrived in the 1770s. In 1900 Tonga became a British protectorate, gaining more autonomy in 1958. Tonga achieved independence in 1970 but retained ties with Britain through the Commonwealth membership.
Majority of the working population is employed in the agricultural sector. Products include coconuts, copra, bananas, watermelons, pumpkins, taro, cassava, rice, groundnuts, vanilla beans, cocoa, coffee, black pepper and ginger. One of the most important industries is fishing. Other industries are food processing, wood products, clothing, textiles and leather goods. The two sources of earning foreign exchange: tourism and money remitted by citizens working overseas.
While Tonga is a Christian country, Languages spoken are Tongan and English.
Chicken, pork and fish are favorite dishes which are eaten with taro and sweet potatoes. Rice is available and breadfruit and tomatoes are cultivated. Traditionally, suckling pig is roasted in an underground oven or "umu". Coconut milk, a popular drink, is also used in cooking. Tropical fruits grown include bananas, citrus fruits, mangoes, pineapples and watermelons. Kava, made from the roots of "piper methysticum", is the traditional drink.
