Samoa
A group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand, make the independent volcanic state of Samoa. The two main islands are Savaii and Upolu. Apia (Upolu) is the capital.
One of the most interesting sights in Samoa are the traditional Samoan houses or "fale". These are designed to protect occupants from sun and rain and to keep the inside temperature as comfortable as possible. Fales are usually round or oval in shape.
A treaty between Britain, Germany and the USA in 1899, divided the islands of Samoa between Germany (Western Samoa) and the United States (American Samoa). Britain withdrew claims to the islands in return for Tonga and the Solomon Islands. Then came the First World War, when New Zealand occupied Western Samoa. Western Samoa gained independence in 1962. In 1997 the Constitution was amended to change the name of the country to the Independent State of Samoa.
Coconut oil and copra are produced by the manufacturing sector. Light manufacturing is expanding. Fishing is an important industry. The service sector is the most important contributor to the national economy. Growing sectors include offshore banking and tourism.

Chicken, pork, fish, shellfish and taro are the staple foods in Samoa. Breadfruit and sweet potatoes are also eaten. The use of coconuts in cooking is popular. Fruits available are bananas, mangoes, papayas and pineapples. A traditional way of preparing food is in an "umu", an outside oven, where food is placed on hot rocks and covered with leaves. Kava, made from the roots of "piper methysticum", is a traditional drink.
