Majority of the country's labor force do subsistence farming. Agricultural crops include coffee, cocoa, tea, coconuts, palm kernels, sweet potatoes, fruit and vegetables. The fishing industry contributes to export earnings. Industries include mining (copper, gold, silver), oil, natural gas, logging, plywood and wood chip production, copra, palm oil processing, and construction.
There are three official languages used in Papua New Guinea: English, Neo Melanesian (tok pisin) and Motu. Over seven hundred indigenous languages are spoken. Majority of the people are Christians and the rest of the people have indigenous beliefs.
Taro roots, bananas, sweet potatoes and sago (palm) are the staple foods. A variety of leafy vegetables are available. Coconut is used in cooking. Fish and other seafood are popular with the people. Coconuts, guavas, mangoes, papayas, passion fruits, pawpaws, pineapples and watermelons are grown.
