Ivory Coast
The Republic of Ivory Coast, also called Cote d'Ivoire is situated in Western Africa. Bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana, Yamoussoukro is the official capital but Abidjan is the commercial and administrative centre.
After the Portuguese, France extended a Protectorate over the coastal area of the country in 1842. In 1893, the Ivory Coast was made a French Colony and became part of French West Africa. In 1958 the Ivory Coast was declared a republic within the French Community. Independence was achieved in 1960. This was followed by civil wars which was appeased by deploying UN peacekeeping forces.
With the main crops being cocoa, coffee, and palm oil agricultural sector provides maximum employment opportunities for people of the Ivory Coast. Industries include oil refining, ship construction, truck and bus assembly, building materials, fertilizer, wood products, textiles, food processing and beverages. America has significant investments in the country's offshore petroleum exploration and development.
While French is the official language in the Ivory Coast, there are sixty indigenous dialects; Dioula is a language which is the most widely spoken.
While majority of the people are Muslims, rest are either Christians or follow indigenous beliefs.
Maize, millet, rice, yams and cassava are staple foods. Fufu, made from plantains or yams, and gari, made from cassava, is traditional food. Recipes use palm oil and groundnuts. Spicy sauces accompany meat and fish. Stews are popular. Chicken is served with vegetables. Palm wine and home-made beer are available.
