Trinidad & Tobago
The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago are the southernmost Caribbean islands, situated close to Venezuela. It is separated from mainland by the Gulf of Paria. Trinidad is the larger between the two islands, with Port-of-Spain as capital of both the islands. The Gulf of Paria has many ports and harbors including Point Fortin, Point Lisas, Pointe-a-Pierre and Port-of-Spain. There are a variety of terrains in the islands – mountains and rainforests in one hand with rivers, lakes and mangroves on the other.
Like in other Caribbean islands, the climate is tropical. Over four hundred species of wild and exotic birds have found their homes in these islands. The rainy season is from June which lasts till December.
The capital city Port-of-Spain, is the urban hub with the usual modern skyscrapers adorning the skyline. It is the commercial centre which houses many hotels, shopping malls and business houses. Tobago, in contrast, is a smaller island. Scarborough, is its largest city as well as the administrative headquarters.
While English is the island’s official language, there are other languages spoken as well, including Hindi, French, Spanish and Chinese.
There is a mixture of religions in Trinidad & Tobago. Over a half of the people are Christians by faith while around twenty percent are Hindus and a small percentage are Muslims. There are some believers of Orisha, a traditional African religion, living in Trinidad & Tobago.
The food habits of the people of Trinidad & Tobago is a mixture of many influences - African, Creole (African and French), East Indian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Syrian and Lebanese. Ingredients like coconut, cassava, sweet potatoes, plantain, fish and meat are used in their cooking. Roti (an Indian food) is popular which is eaten with curries and meat. Large amounts of fish is consumed which could be barbecued, baked, stewed or curried. Chinese and Spanish recipes are also very popular. Tropical fruits such as guavas, mangoes and papayas are used in a variety of desserts.
