While Anguilla is presently an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, St Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983. Association with the United Kingdom continues through membership of the Commonwealth.

The most famous architectural monument St Kitts and Nevis is the Brimstone Hill Fortress, declared a World Heritage site. The Fortress, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is considered to be one of the best-preserved monuments in America.
