Netherlands Antilles
Netherlands Antilles essentially consist of two major groups of islands in the Caribbean sea - Curaçao and Bonaire. There is also islands like Saba, St. Eustatius and Sint Maarten in the northeastern Caribbean. Once known as the Netherlands West Indies or Dutch Antilles/West Indies, the islands are an independent and autonomous part of the Kingdom of Netherlands. The two islands have their own governments.
The two main industries contributing to the country’s economy are tourism and petroleum. Transshipment of petroleum as well as refineries in Curacao and the offshore finance industry have given this country far more stability and higher per capita income when compared to other countries in the area. Consumer goods are all imported from Venezuela, United States and Mexico. The government of Netherlands provides sufficient developmental aid to the islands. Inadequacy of water combined with substandard soil conditions, make it unviable for agricultural growth. The Antillean guilder has a fixed exchange rate with the United States dollar of 1.79:1.
The capital of Netherlands Antilles is Willemstad, Curacao. Both Dutch and English languages are widely used. Religions are Baptist, Catholic, Protestant and others. The people of Netherlands Antilles have mixed origin. Added to which is the vantage location of the islands. Both put together, have given the country a very unique culture. There is a very strong presence of Americans in Netherlands Antilles and quite a lot of local culture is influenced by the Americans.
