Montserrat
The Caribbean island of Montserrat is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, situated on the southeast side of Puerto Rico. The entire terrain is replete with volcanic mountainous range. In fact, Plymouth, its capital was evacuated in 1997 due to frequent volcanic eruptions and all government offices were relocated to Carr’s Bay and the Little Bay area. The local people were allowed to work in UK for two years, which later led to permanent residency status and subsequently to UK citizenship in 2002.
The frequency of volcanic activity had forced many to leave the country, though some have since returned and settled here. English is the official language, though locals speak their own English-based dialect. Mostly Christians by religion, locals relish soups and stews. A thick goat meat stew called ‘goat water’ is very popular. Another interesting dish consumed by many is called ‘mountain chicken’. The dish has nothing to do with chicken, and is made of frog legs – frogs typically found in the island and Dominica. Sea fish is popular and so is the local cocktail called Montserrat Rum Punch. As you can expect in a tropical climate, fruits like bananas, papayas and sour sops grow in abundance in this island.
Developmental aid from the British government has helped in the rebuilding of both economy and revamping the infrastructure of Montserrat, which was devastated due to severe volcanic activities between 1995 and 2003. Today one can see a thriving economy in the island – based on construction, electronic appliances, textiles and rum. The agricultural produces also contribute to the growth and prosperity of the island. Vegetables such as cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and peppers are grown in plenty. Then there is Livestock as well as a healthy fishing industry. The tourist industry provides great opportunities for activities such as deep sea fishing and diving. It makes a major contribution to the island’s economy as well.
