Martinique is a happy place to be in, anytime of the year. There are many celebrations and events happening all year long. This festival, also called the Vaval, lasts for four days and is one of the most talked-about events in the year’s calendar. It begins just prior to the Catholic Lent. But celebrations begin much before this – the streets are brightly lit with festivities all around, including singing, parades and the intoxicating rhythm of drums fill the air. People dress up in ornate costumes … it is great fun to be in Martinique at this time of the year.
But where is Martinique? It is located in the center of the Caribbean’s eastern archipelago. Before the French arrived on Martinique, the iCarib Indians were already living there. It is these people that the Caribbean region was named after. The Caribs named the island Madinina, meaning “Island of Flowers” in the Carib language. Some believe that the name Martinique was derived from this Carib word, while the other school of thought says that the island was named after Saint Martin. Not just French flavor, this magnificent island is shaped by African, West Indian, and Creole cultures and traditions. So great is the influence of the French in this island that some people refer to the city of Sainte Pierre as the Paris of the Lesser Antilles. Of course this was prior to the horrific volcanic eruption in 1902 that wiped out the entire city and killed over 30000 people.
The temperature of Martinique is also decided by its location. Never too hot or too cold, the weather conditions of this island make it extremely conducive to travelers to visit it at anytime they choose. The best part about the weather is that unlike other islands, rainy and dry seasons are hardly perceivable.
Considered as one of the most developed islands in the Lesser Antilles, Martinique is a fine and stylish country that has copied its mother country – France to the tee. Although French is the official language of Martinique, many locals speak Creole. In fact, Creole is more spoken than written.
