Jamaica
Jamaica, an island in the West Indies was first explored by Christopher Columbus in 1494, who initially named it St. Iago. It is situated south of Cuba and west of Haiti. The terrain consists of hills, plateau and the famous Blue Hills, a group of volcanic hills. Till 1655, the island remained under the rule of Spaniards, after the British took over. But prior to Columbus’ first arrival in Jamaica, the Arawaks from South America were already settlers there, but when the Spaniards reigned, the Arawaks were gradually diminishing due to disease, slavery and war.
For more than one and a half centuries, sugar made Jamaica one of the most famous countries in the world. Interestingly the discovery of bananas, reduced the dependence on sugar! Jamaica had undergone several years of British rule, till in 1953, when it gained autonomy and in 1962, it gained independence though remaining a member of the Commonwealth.
Historically speaking emigration from Jamaica has been very heavy. It is estimated that nearly 20000 Jamaicans immigrate to the United States every year. The large number of people moving out of the country has also resulted in huge sums of money being deposited to the country’s coffers by expatriate communities. It is estimated that a sum close to $800 million per year, is remitted by these communities currently in United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. This vast amount of money has definitely contributed to the economic growth and prosperity of Jamaica.
The soil of Jamaica is rich in natural minerals like bauxite. In fact, ever since the discovery of bauxite in the ‘40s, the focus of the economy has shifted from sugarcane and banana. By ‘70s Jamaica was the world leader in bauxite exports. The climate and infrastructure of Jamaica is very conducive to agriculture and tourism. Though historically, Jamaica has had close ties with the U.K., but in terms of trade, financial, and cultural relations it is presently closer to the United States. Jamaica is linked with the other countries of the English-speaking Caribbean through the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and more broadly through the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
