Haiti
The oldest black republic of the world, Haiti, unfortunately is today one of the poorest nations of the world. What was once termed as the ‘Pearl of the Caribbean’ Haiti was once one of the richest colonies owned by France – complete with sky-touching mahogany trees and lush green natural scenery.
While the people in Haiti are entirely of African origin, French is the official language. Creole is however the language widely spoken locally. The relevance of superstition running the country is evident by the fact that nearly 90% of the people still practice Voodoo as a form of religion. It could be said that the national religion of Haiti is Voodoo. Though Roman Catholicism is called the official religion of the country but most Haitians believe that voodoo can and will run parallel to Christianity. While it is one of the most populated countries in the western hemisphere, only half of the population is considered literate.
It will not be a bad idea to learn a bit of Haitian language before you actually land there. Here are some English meanings to some Creole words, for everyday use:

The local driving is on the right and a Canada or American diving license is considered valid in Haiti. Public transport consists of Tap-taps, which are bright-colored minibuses or trucks. You could also avail of taxis and car rentals.
