Guadeloupe

A heady cocktail of modern culture influenced by the French and the Africans, abundance of sunshine beaches and luxury resorts, topped with a lot of sugar and rum – welcome to warm Guadeloupe, home of Creole culture.

Not quite French but Guadeloupe is an extension of France. In other words, Guadeloupe, a Caribbean island is an overseas territory of France. It is made up of volcanic islands of Basse-Terre, La Desirade, Grande-Terre, Iles de la Petite Terre, Iles des Saintes, Marie-Galante, Saint-Barthelemy, and Saint-Martin (shared with the Dutch Antilles). Basse-Terre is the island’s capital.

To imagine Guadeloupe, imagine the wings of a butterfly. The northern corner of the wing is Pointe-a-Pitre, main commercial centre and the airport where you land. This part also sustains a seaport called Grande-Terre. The southern tip of the wing is Basse-Terre. This place is famous for its botanical garden, and a volcano. There are in total nine islands within the jurisdiction of Guadeloupe, which locals lovingly call "The Pearl of the French West Indies."

Because of its strong French connection, food and wine at Guadeloupe is fabulous. One of the most famous festivals in Guadeloupe is an annual event called Fete de Cuisinieres – which should be any food lover’s paradise on earth. A grand Creole banquet is cooked and laid out by female chefs, with an elaborate spread of lobster, rice and crabs, delicious pastries and a dish called jambon de Noel, or Christmas ham. No visit to Guadeloupe is complete without tasting a drink called ti'punch. This strong liquor is a delectable cocktail of island’s typical rum mixed with sugarcane syrup and fresh lime. Guadeloupe is also famous for its superb quality of home-grown coffee. Usually, locals have it the Cuban way – black, sweet and hot.

The peak season in Guadeloupe is between February and April, when it is dry with sparse rains. The hurricane months are between July and November. Les Saintes, is one of Guadeloupe’s many offshore islands known for its world-famous bays.

Zouk is the name of French Caribbean's popular music. You can hear its double beat and hypnotic West African rhythm almost anywhere in Guadeloupe.
