Greenland
Care to inhale some clear Arctic air, witness icebergs of all shapes and sizes … gigantic and dramatic glaciers suddenly rising from the ocean waters …clubbed with winter sports that is played all year round! Welcome to the wonderful world of Greenland.
The largest island in the world, Greenland is a self-governing overseas division of Denmark. It lies within the Arctic Circle. Bordered by the Arctic Ocean in the north, the Greenland Sea in the east, the Denmark Strait separates it from Iceland. The capital is Nuuk (formerly known as Godthåb). Being part of Denmark, Greenland has two representatives in the Danish Folketing. Since 1979, Greenland has its own home rule with its own parliament.
The monetary unit of Greenland is Krone and the languages used in the country are Greenlandic (East Inuit), Danish and English. In terms of racial divide, majority are Greenlanders – who are Eskimos and whites. Danish and other races form a minority. The religion practiced here is Evangelical Lutheran.
Interestingly, Greenland does not have even a square inch of arable land! The only vegetables grown are greenhouse or garden varieties. Fish processing, mainly shrimp and halibut is a major industry. Greenland is however a mineral-rich country – as a result of which, gold, niobium, tantalite, uranium, iron and diamond mining forms part of major occupation. It is also rich in natural resources like zinc, lead, coal, molybdenum, platinum, hydropower, and possible oil and gas.
Fish and fish products are the country’s major exports. Machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, food, petroleum products are all imported from countries like Denmark, Japan, China, Sweden, Norway, who are the major trade partners.
