Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, was discovered, thanks to Christopher Columbus who chanced upon this country in his maiden voyage in 1492. He named it La Española. The Spanish named the island of Quisqueya "Hispaniola". Its capital Santo Domingo, is known to be the oldest settlement of Europeans, in the western part of the world.
It is important to note that Dominican Republic is the second largest country after Cuba, if you consider the West Indies. Home to Spanish colonists since 1493, Dominican Republic hosted the first chartered university, hospital, cathedral and monastery in America. Though the country gained independence in 1844, there was a lot of political unrest and instability. Today, Dominican Republic is a flourishing and economically independent country, a republic which is rich in agriculture and tourism. One more source of income for the country is money deposited by family members working in the USA and Puerto Rico.
The main industries in the Dominican Republic are tourism, sugar processing, ferronickel, textiles, gold mining beverages, clothing and footwear. There are manufacturing industries like mining, cement, electronic components and sugar processing which are flourishing in the country. In the agricultural field, the country grows sugarcane, coffee, cotton, cocoa, corn, bananas, beans, potatoes, rice, dairy products, and livestock. The items which bring the country good export revenue are ferronickel, sugar, gold, silver, and coffee.
Spanish is the pre-dominantly present language in the country. Close to 95% of the population are considered literate. Majority of the population are Roman Catholics. The local currency is the Dominican Peso.
Other than Santo Domingo, which is the capital city, other important cities are Santiago, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Barahona, La Vega, San Francisco and Higuey. The Yaque del Norte is its longest river.
The climate in the Dominican Republic is tropical.
