With Havana as its capital, Cuba is the largest of all Caribbean islands. It is situated between the Bahamas and Jamaica. Hundreds of shallow rivers flow across the country, which is one-fourth filled with forest mountains. These forests are filled with cedars, ebony, kapok trees, giant figs, mahogany, oaks, pine, royal palm (the national tree). There is an extensive range of mangroves along the shoreline.
The majority of the Cuban people are of Spanish descent. No wonder then that Spanish is the official language though English is taught in schools. There are a lot of descendants of African origin amongst the population in Cuba and a very thin population of people of Chinese origin.
While most Cuban Christians are Roman Catholics, other Christian religions are present as well. There is a sect belong to the Santeria religion which is a mixture of Yoruba animist beliefs. Voodoo is also practiced by a large number of Cubans.
The daily diet of the average Cuban comprise of rice and beans, fried plantain, stew, pork and chicken. Interestingly, fish a rarity in Cuba, in spite of the country being an island. Rum is a popular drink with Cubans and so is ‘Cuba Libre’ a rum-based cocktail.
Cuba has tropical climate with heavy rainfall between May and November. Like in every tropical country the flora and fauna are lavish. A wide variety of fruits and flowers are available in Cuba, which are not only exported but lends the country a good deal of charm and beauty. Cuba is a home to a wide variety of birds and butterflies and a resting place for many migratory species.
The main agricultural products are sugar and tobacco. Other crops include citrus fruits, pineapples, coffee, rice, potatoes, beans, coffee and rum. Forestry is an important industry as well.
