Bermuda
The economy of Bermuda depends largely on the service sector. One of the most important financial centers of the world, Bermuda is a renowned service provider in the areas of investment holding, finance and insurance. Tourism, unquestionably, is a large contributor to the country’s economy and prosperity. Equipment and foods are mostly imported. The local agricultural produce includes flowers, dairy products, vegetables, citrus fruits and bananas.
Juan de Bermudez, a Spanish seafarer, discovered Bermuda in 1503. A British Colony since 1684, today, Bermuda is one of the overseas territories of the United Kingdom. It is made up of a group of islands situated in the North Atlantic ocean near South Carolina in the USA. The first capital city of Bermuda was St. George’s which was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000. The historic city of St George is an excellent example of early settlement in the New World. Hamilton is its current capital. While there are no rivers or lakes in Bermuda, the islands are inter-connected through causeways and bridges.
Sixty-one percent of the population is of black descent and thirty-nine percent of the population is of white descent.
The population is a mixture of blacks and whites – blacks being slightly more in number. English and Portuguese are the two languages in use in Bermuda. Majority of the people are Christians.
The flavor of Bermudian cuisine is influenced by the cultures of its ethnic groups, such as British, West Indian and Portuguese. A large variety of fish and vegetables form part of the daily diet in Bermuda. Tropical fruits like bananas, citrus fruits, guavas, loquats, papayas, and Surinam cherries are grown and consumed. Black Seal Rum with ginger beer is a popular local drink.
Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts is a world famous annual festival, that was founded thirty years ago. Over and above local performers, the Festival welcomes musicians, dancers, and actors from many parts of the world. For instance, performers in 2004 included Isaac Hayes, James Richardson, Seal and Cindy Laws
