Barbados

Barbados is also known as the ‘Little England’ of the Caribbean, and not without reason. The sheer fact that the country remained under uninterrupted British rule from 1627 till its independence in 1966, has left some indelible impressions in its cultural ethos. The British influence is felt through every day life as well as the infrastructure in this not very large island. For Barbados is an island in the Atlantic, about 300 miles off north of Venezuela, which is 21 miles long and 14 miles wide at its lengthiest point. Barbados boasts of some of the finest beaches in the world.

Yet Barbados is not completely British. There are lots of African sounds and smells as well, in everything around Barbados. The population is an interesting blend of British settler blood with that of Afro descendents. The two strong flavors from England and Africa give Barbados a unique cultural essence, which set the island in a class of its own. The combined effect of these two opposite cultures, are evident from the food to music, from architectural styles to street names. The English (official language) spoken here is referred to as the ‘Queen’s English’ while the enigmatic local dialect is widely prevalent. Interestingly, there exists, a small but vibrant Hindu (from India), Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) and Jewish communities, all living in perfect harmony. The locals, called ‘Bajans’, are as Caribbean as any other you could think of.

The soil porosity and the moderate temperature of Barbados, make it the most appropriate climate for sugarcane cultivation, which was historically the island's main occupation. Today, sugar and molasses are the country's largest exports. The climate, infrastructure and the natural scenic beauty make Barbados a great getaway for tourists from all over the world, resulting in fabulous revenues from the tourism industry. In the manufacturing sector, chemicals and electrical components along with textiles, rum, and banking are growing segments of the economy.

The best time to visit Barbados is during the cooler months - December through May. Mid-December to Mid-April is also the peak tourist season when prices are higher and hotels are over-crowded.
