Bahamas
Bahamas derived from the Spanish word baja-mar meaning ‘shallow sea’,
is also known as 700 islands, though there are nearly 4000 small islands, islets and cays which are all part of Bahamas. There are presently fifteen main islands which make up Bahamas, which include Cat Island, Bimini, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama and New Providence. Bahamas is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, near the southern tip of Florida and extends up to Cuba in the south. Most islands in the Bahamas are full of uninhabitable swamps. The ones which are suitable for dwelling purposes are known for their long, magnificent beaches. As the name suggests, the seas which surround the islands are shallow and the water, crystal clear.
Though there are several alarm systems in place, the climate of Bahamas, as is expected in a sub-tropical region, is hurricane-prone, especially between June and November. The islands also home about five percent of the world’s total coral content. Corals are known to absorb carbon-dioxide, which helps in maintaining proper ecological balance.
As can be expected from a sub-tropical climate, Bahamas is known for its magnificently colorful flora and fauna. The national flower and bird of Bahamas are the Yellow Elder and the pink West Indian flamingo. Its national tree is the Tree of Life (Lignum Vitae). The island of Bimini is known to be the capital of game fishing in the world.
The commercial hub of Bahamas is Nassau (New Providence). You could see many colonial styles of architectural wonders here which is the legacy of King George III, who had shifted residence to Bahamas, during the American independence. English is the official language and Christianity the main religion of people of Bahamas. Over eighty percent of the people in Bahamas are of African origin, mainly from the Yoruba tribe. The remainder of the population is largely of European descent, A combination of several influences, like African and European superstitions and some aspects of Christianity, have given rise to the practice of several black magic rituals like Voodoo, Shango and Santeria. Populist tax laws have made the Bahamas an international banking centre. No body pays any income tax , capital gains or inheritance taxes. The government raises revenue through selective taxes such as hotel occupancy tax, restaurant service charges, custom duties and departure tax.
