Spain
The world knows Spain, because of one sport and that is bull fighting. Most associated with the country, it is a tradition and played not only in Spain but also in Mexico, Portugal and Southern France. Football is another important sport in Spain. Clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona are amongst the world's best and known the world over. Interestingly, the Basque region's most famous local sport is pelota or jai-alai , which is equally popular in Cuba and Florida!
Spain, an European country is closest to Africa, geographically. It has both an Atlantic and a Mediterranean coastline. Portugal is on Spain's western side and is divided from France by the Pyrenees Mountains. The Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean, are all Spanish. Madrid is Spain’s capital city. Other cities of importance are Barcelona, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada and Valencia.
After the famous civil war in Spain during 1936 and 1939, the rebel leader General Franco took charge. He ruled till his death in 1975. His successor Prince Juan Carlos was responsible in reviving a new constitution and restoring democracy to Spain. In 1986, Spain joined the EU as a member. Historically, Spain has misspent its fortunes in financing wars and conspicuous consumption, leaving the country poor in the bargain. The civil war worsened the situation. The ‘60s however saw Spain prospering again, with tourism as a main trigger to economic growth. Till today, tourism remains an important contributor to the national economy. Being a member of the European community it has received generous subsidies, for investments in infrastructural developments. The industrial growth has made Spain today one of the world’s leading industrialized nations, though traditionally Spain had an agro-based economy. Metal manufactures, shipbuilding, automobiles, machine tools, clay products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, textiles, clothes, footwear, food and wine are a few of the industries Spain is famous for.
Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Galacian and Euskara are the few languages spoken in Spain. A number of people all over the world speak Spanish. Traditional Spanish dishes include tortillas, (potato omelets), paella, gazpacho (cold soup), sausages, meats such as lamb and pork, cheeses, sardines, octopus, squid and fruit. Wine is plentiful and Spain is well known for Sangria.
