Slovenia
This country is just for you, if you are a ski enthusiast. Known for its hosting of the World Alpine Ski Championships and Ski Jumping Championships, Slovenia is paradise for winter sports buffs. Kranjska Gora is Slovenia's most important winter sports centre followed by Maribor Pohorje. Gliding and parachuting are also popular sports in Slovenia.
The Republic of Slovenia is small compared to many other republics in Europe. It is bordered by Austria, Hungary, Italy, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. Ljubljana is the capital. Koper, Slovenia's only seaport, is an important port shared by both Slovenia and Austria. There are a number of castles in Slovenia, which hold a tourist’s interest. The Bled Castle, Predjama Castle, and the medieval towns of Izola, Koper and Piran bear legacy of the historical past and allows a new experience in architectural styles. Most of these monuments are protected sites.
From 1988 there was a movement for Slovenia's independence. Communism ended in Slovenia after democratic elections in 1990 and Slovenia declared independence on 25 June 1991. The Yugoslav Army responded to Slovenia's declaration by taking military action. Fortunately this was short-lived and by the end of October of that year the Yugoslav Army had left Slovenia.
After the end of the communist era, the first democratic elections were held in Slovenia in 1990 and the country declared independence in 1991. It was in 2004, that Slovenia finally became a member state of the European Union. Since acquiring independence from Yugoslavia, Slovenia has been successfully making inroads into profitable market economy. In terms of agricultural produce, Slovenia grows wheat, potatoes, sugar beets, grapes, hops and fruit.
Industries include lead and zinc smelting, ferrous metallurgy and aluminum products, trucks, electric power equipment, machine tools, chemicals, wood products, textiles, fashion, wine and food processing. Tourism in the service sector is growing at a rapid pace and is showing healthy contributions to the national economy.
Austria and Italy have influenced Slovenia cuisine greatly. Main meals often consist of soup and a meat or fish dish accompanied by salad and bread. Milk and cheese, especially cottage cheese, are traditional to the Slovene diet.
