Slovakia
Bratislava is the capital city of the Slovak Republic. Situated in Central Europe, Slovakia has Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary along its borders. Other important cities in Slovakia are Banska Bystrica, Kosice, Levice, Levoca, Nitra, Piestany, Presov, Trencin and Zilina.

Michael Kovac became the first President of the Slovak Republic. Of the two, Slovakia was at an economic disadvantage since it always depended on heavy industries for growth and development, which was based on the Eastern Block. Then in 2004, Slovakia became a member state of the European Union.
Though a small percentage of income comes from agriculture, the products and crops grown include grains, potatoes, sugar beets, fruit and hops. Poultry, pigs and cattle are reared. There is also a tradition of horse breeding in Slovakia. Industry and construction account for the employment opportunities of a significant percentage of the Slovakia population. Industries are mining, electricity, gas, coke, oil, nuclear fuel, transport vehicles, machinery, electrical and optical apparatus, chemicals and manmade fibers, rubber products, paper and printing, earthenware, ceramics, textiles, food and wine. The service sector is the largest money earner and employer in Slovakia.
Slovak is the official language and most of the citizens are Christians. The Slovakian cuisine is more or less influenced by the tastes of its neighbors especially Hungary and Austria. Soups and stews are popular. Feta cheese dumplings (bryndzove halusky), potato dumplings and spicy stuffed potato pancakes are traditional dishes.
The characteristic cuisine of the Slovak Republic includes many types of pastries and cakes, for example, cakes with curd cheese filling, fruitcake, honey cakes and gingerbread. Kolache is a traditional pastry.
