When you are talking about Russia, you are talking about the Russian Federation, the largest country in the world. The country’s resources include oil, chemicals, coal, iron ore and timber. Production of construction equipment, communications equipment, machines and vehicles form the mainline industry in Russia. The country also has a shipbuilding industry. Other industries include the production of medical and scientific instruments, consumer durables, textiles, handicrafts, food processing and beverages. The tourism industry is looking up in recent times with millions visiting the country.
Domes are a distinctive feature of Russian architecture. Examples include the Archangel Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Moscow's Kremlin with the Ivan the Great Bell-Tower. The Kremlin, was once both a royal palace and a religious centre. The Kremlin opens on to Red Square and the famous Saint Basil Basilica.
Russia is famous for two things - caviar and vodka. Caviar, roe from the sturgeon, is eaten on blinis (thin buckwheat pancakes), or on toast, often accompanied by vodka. Herring, with onion and potatoes, is a less expensive seafood dish enjoyed by Russians. Russian recipes such as stroganov and Russian salad are popular in many countries. Russia's favorite alcoholic drinks are kvass (fermented rye-bread water) and vodka.
