Romania

Romania is situated in the southern part of East Europe. It has the Black Sea on one side and the countries of Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine along its borders. There are totally six regions in Romania which are again sub-divided into forty countries, excluding its capital city, Bucharest.

Romania has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Many emperors have ruled this country and each one of them have left some kind of indelible impressions on the culture and history of the country. Romania had turned into a satellite country of the USSR as it had adopted communism and became Peoples Republic of Romania. After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Romania looked west, and soon became an associate member of the European Union.

Romania was a late entrant to the European Union, joining the EU only in January 2006. But from the beginning of the new century, Romania has been doing export business with the EU markets. Agriculture and industry make equal contributions to the national economy. While agricultural products include grains, potatoes, sugar beets, sunflower seeds, grapes and dairy products, the industries in Romania are mining, metallurgy, timber, construction materials, auto assembly, light machinery, petroleum refining, chemicals, textiles, footwear and processed food. The country is also a major wine producer. Today, Romania is very focused on promoting tourism, specially the Black Sea Coast, the Danube Delta, Transylvania and Maramures. There are a number of natural sites and archeological monuments which are in the world heritage list:

The Danube Delta

Six Iron-Age Dacian Fortresses from the first centuries BC and AD.

The Historic Centre of Sighisoara, a fortified town founded by German craftsmen and merchants.

The Wooden Churches of the Maramures and the Fortified Churches in Transylvania. While the official language is Romanian, majority of the people are Romanian Orthodox. Greeks, Hungarians, Germans and Turks have all influenced the Romanian cuisine. Soups (vegetable, fish and meat) and salads (potato salad, cabbage salad and fish roe salad) are popular along with numerous meat and fish dishes. "Mamaliga", made from corn, is a staple food and can be prepared in a variety of ways. Stuffed vine leaves and grilled minced meat, "mititei" and "patricieni", are also popular. Pork is eaten frequently, often with potatoes and salad.
