Looking at the long coastline, it is not unusual to find that seafood is the mainstay of Portuguese cuisine. Bacalhau, or dried and salted cod, is so popular that it could be called a national dish. Sardines are also popular. Meat is often served with a hot chili sauce called piri-piri. The most famous wines of Portugal are the fortified port and madeira.
