Poland

One of the largest countries in Europe, the Republic of Poland has Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast), Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic and Germany as its bordering countries. The Baltic Sea is its neighboring sea. Over and above being a large country, Poland never had any geographical border which could provide protection. The economic growth of Poland was visible from the ‘90s. Service sector is the highest earner in the country. Industries include coal mining, iron and steel, shipbuilding, machinery, chemicals, glass, textiles and food processing. The tourist industry has become an important source of revenue for the country in recent times. Agricultural products grown in Poland are wheat, potatoes, vegetables and fruit. Cattle, pigs, poultry and sheep are reared.

Capital of Poland is Warsaw. Other big cities include Bialystok, Bydgoszcz, Czestochowa, Gliwice, Krakow, Lodz, Lublin, Olsztyn, Poznan, Radom, Rzeszow, Swinoujscie, Torun, Ustka, Wieliczka, Wroclaw and Zakopane. Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin are important ports.

Countries like Austria, Germany, Hungary and Russia have all influenced the culinary tastes of Poland. Meat, especially pork, ham and sausage, is eaten with vegetables, dumplings, noodles, buckwheat and rye bread. Hunter's stew, made with five or six types of wild game, is a national dish in Poland. The Poles like to drink their tea without milk, often with a slice of lemon and sugar.
