Fishing of cod, herring and mackerel is popular while fish farming produces salmon and trout. Other industries are pulp and paper products, shipbuilding, chemicals, textiles and food processing. Norway imports all the food that it consumes. The agricultural products are only barley, wheat, potatoes and dairy products. Cattle, sheep and pigs are reared. Tourism is another important foreign currency earner.
Norway is still not a member of the European Union.
The extended coastline is a guarantee that Norwegian cuisine will most surely have fish. The recent aquaculture ensures plenty of salmon and trout. Cured meat is also a favorite with Norwegians. Milk is an important ingredient in Norwegian cooking. Other dairy products, such as, sour milk cheese and brown goat's cheese, are part of the Norwegian diet. Beer and aquavit (spirit distilled from potatoes and flavored with caraway) are traditional Norwegian drinks.
Norwegians regularly participate in sporting activities like cross-country skiing, skating, curling, rowing, sailing and football. Bokmal Norwegian and Nynorsk Norwegian are official languages. Majority of the people are members of the Church of Norway.
