Netherlands
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is situated in Western Europe. It has North Sea on one side and is bordered by Belgium and Germany. Other territories which are part of the kingdom include The West Frisian Islands, off the coast of North Holland, and the islands of the Dutch Antilles, in the Caribbean. While the central government is seated in The Hague, Amsterdam is the capital city and an important port. Rotterdam is a major city and one of the world's leading ports.
Because most of the country is low-lying with half the country below sea level, dikes or dams are built to save the country from drowning. Hydraulic engineering has played a huge part in protection against flooding and reclamation of land. One of the recent innovative developments in the Netherlands is the construction of wooden and aluminum houses that float. These floating houses are built on concrete pontoons which are tied to the land. This is considered to be an excellent idea for alternate housing in a country which is prone to flooding. Traditionally houses were built along the rings of city canals. The rich lived in the city centre. You will find the houses harrow and high – this is because there was a tax on the width of the building!
The Netherlands has an advanced and well developed transport system that includes water transport and excellent ports. It has a very stable economy which depends primarily on industry and mechanized farming. The service sector is equally well developed and one of the highest employers. Agricultural produce includes grains sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and dairy products. The Netherlands is well known the world over for cheeses such as Edam and Gouda and the production of tulip bulbs. Fishing is a traditional industry in Netherlands. Other industries include metal and engineering products, electrical machinery and equipment, microelectronics, chemicals, petroleum and construction.
Dutch and Frisian are official languages though English is widely used. Most people are Christians though there is a small percentage of Muslims.
Dairy products are an essential part of Dutch cuisine. Milk, butter and cheese are consumed in large quantities together with eggs, sausages and ham. Desserts include pancakes and apple pie, both served with cream. Beer is the traditional alcoholic drink of the Netherlands.
