Moldovan, similar to Romanian, is the official language. Most people belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Soups, stews, and meat and fish dishes accompanied by vegetables and salads form the traditional diet in Moldova. "Mamaliga", made from corn, is a must-have food item while "Mititei", grilled minced meat, and stuffed cabbage leaves are also popular. Because of the numerous vineyards in Moldova, brandy and vodka are produced locally.
Agriculture is a major economic contributor as well as a provider for large-scale employment. Agricultural products are grains, vegetables, sugar beets, apples, apricots, cherries, grapes, peaches, dairy products and tobacco. Industries include agricultural machinery, foundry equipment, refrigerators and freezers, washing machines, textiles, footwear, food processing and beverages. Tourism is receiving renewed interest and showing good growth.
