Malta

The Mediterranean island of Republic of Malta is situated south of the Italian island of Sicily. The Republic consists of the island of Malta, the islands of Gozo and Comino, as well as the uninhabited islands of Cominotto and Filfla. Valletta is the capital city and the main port. Malta has no mountains or rivers. The City of Valetta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island was occupied by the British till its independence in 1964. It became a republic ten years later. Being a member of the commonwealth, Malta retains its relationship with the British. Malta is now a member of the European Union.

English and Maltese are both official languages. The majority of the Maltese people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. The service sector is the most important part of the economy.
