Malta
The Mediterranean island of Republic of Malta is situated south of the Italian island of Sicily. The Republic consists of the island of Malta, the islands of Gozo and Comino, as well as the uninhabited islands of Cominotto and Filfla. Valletta is the capital city and the main port. Malta has no mountains or rivers. The City of Valetta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It houses over three hundred ancient monuments including the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Cathedral of St John and churches built by the Knights of Malta.
The island was occupied by the British till its independence in 1964. It became a republic ten years later. Being a member of the commonwealth, Malta retains its relationship with the British. Malta is now a member of the European Union.
Maltese people love their bread, soup, pastry and pasta. Stuffed dishes are an important feature of Maltese cuisine and stewing is a favorite way to cook food. Stuffat Tal-Fenek, rabbit stew, is a national dish. Lampuki pie, made using dorado fish, is another of Malta's national dishes. "Pastizzi" are popular snacks. These are thin crispy pastry parcels with a variety of fillings, such as ricotta cheese. Beer and wine are produced locally.
English and Maltese are both official languages. The majority of the Maltese people belong to the Roman Catholic Church. The service sector is the most important part of the economy. The main sectors are shipping services, finance and tourism. Industries in Malta are shipbuilding and repair, construction, electronics, textiles, clothing, footwear, tobacco, food and beverages. Agriculture makes a small contribution to the economy – the products include grains, potatoes, cauliflowers, green peppers, tomatoes, grapes, citrus fruits and cut flowers. Poultry, goats, pigs, sheep and cattle are reared. Though fishing plays a minor part in the overall economy but has an important and traditional role as a food item for the Maltese family.
