Macedonia
Did you know that football is the most popular sport in Macedonia? The Republic of Macedonia (earlier known as Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is a tiny country in South Eastern Europe and is bordered by Greece, Albania, Serbia and Bulgaria.
Other sports in Macedonia include basketball, volleyball, karate and wrestling.
Interestingly, in this small country, in the summer months Swimming Marathons are annual events on Lake Ohrid and during the winter months you could ski in Macedonia's winter sports centers. Macedonia also takes part in the Olympic Games.
Skopje is the capital city of Macedonia, which has a mountainous terrain. Bitola is Macedonia's second largest city. Lake Ohrid, the largest of Macedonia's natural lakes is part UNESCO World Heritage site. Macedonia shares the Lake Ohrid, with Albania. Lake Prespa, also shared with Albania and Greece, is Macedonia's second largest lake.
When you are in Macedonia, you can see numerous churches, monasteries and mosques. During the Ottoman rule, many churches were transformed into mosques. The population of Macedonia are a mixture of Macedonians and Albanians. The people either belong to the Macedonian Orthodox Church or they are Muslims.
Cuisine of Macedonia has heavy Balkan influence. Traditional food includes bread, soups, stews, lamb kebabs, stuffed vegetables, moussaka and minced meat dishes such as "kjebapchinja" and meat balls. Meat (pork, chicken, lamb, beef) and fish are served with rice, pasta and vegetables: aubergines, beans, cucumber, mushrooms, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes. Dairy products include yoghurt and feta, a white salty cheese.
Ever since Macedonia became independent, the country has focused on privatization. Being one of the poorest members of the Federal Peoples’ Republic of Yugoslavia, Macedonia has a high degree of unemployment. Mining and some industries like steel, cement, energy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, food processing, wine and beverages provide employment opportunities. The agricultural sector produces grapes, vegetables, milk and eggs. The services sectors, like banking, insurance and tourism, are the highest contributors to the national economy.
