There are three important dates which you must remember if you are in Lithuania.
16th February – the day Lithuania got Independence from Soviet Russia in 1918
11th March – the day of the Restoration of Lithuania's Statehood in 1990.
6th July - The Day of Statehood also marks the crowning of Mindaugas (1236 - 1263) who was Lithuania's only king.
The Republic of Lithuania is situated in Eastern Europe. Its neighboring seas and countries are Baltic Sea, Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Russia (Kaliningrad).Vilnius is the capital city. Other cities include Kaunas, Klaipeda (Lithuania's main port), Siauliai, Panevezys and Alytus. Lithuania has over seven hundred rivers and over three thousand lakes.
Till 1990 Lithuania was under the Soviet Republic, when it was the first to declare independence. It was recognized in 1991 and it took till 1993, when the country was devoid of all Russian soldiers. Lithuania is now part of the European Union.
Lithuanian is the official language of the country and most people are Roman Catholics.
An average Lithuanian would have soups (beet, sauerkraut and sorrel), stews, sausages, smoked meat and rye bread as his staple diet. Meat (pork, chicken and duck) or fish (eel, pike and herring) served with potatoes and vegetables are eaten during main meals. A large variety of dishes made with potato are available in Lithuania. Stuffed potato dumplings called "cepelinai" are very popular
Privatization of government-run business has given a boost to the country’s economy. Agriculture, though does not contribute much to the economy, is a good source of employment nevertheless.
