Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a small country measuring 161 square kilo meters – smaller than Washington D.C. It lies between Austria and Switzerland on the eastern bank of the Rhine River. Low valleys and Alpine peaks make up for its horizon. The country has a constitutional monarchy which has hereditary roots.
The national name of the country is Fuerstentum Liechtenstein. It has traditionally been agro-based economy, though industrialization has now increased giving employment to more than half the work force. Dairying and raising livestock and growing cereals are occupations pursued only by a few. The leading manufactured products are machinery and other metal goods, pharmaceuticals, optical lenses, electronic equipment, textiles, ceramics, and consumer goods. A significant amount of the country’s production is exported. The exports include: small specialty machinery, connectors for audio and video, parts for motor vehicles, dental products, hardware, prepared foodstuffs, electronic equipment and optical products. Because of the low tax structures, a lot of companies have made heir headquarters here. Tourism is a growing industry. The privacy retained by the banking institutions has made this a tax haven and a popular banking hub. Liechtenstein is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
Liechtenstein uses Swiss currency and is represented abroad through Switzerland. The country has no army and only a small police force. Liechtenstein is divided into 11 communes.
The capital and largest city of Liechtenstein is Vaduz. German is its official language but the Alemannic dialect is used. Prince Hans Adam II is the ruler of the state since 1989.
The country’s natural resources are hydroelectric potential and its arable land. Major trading partners are the EU (Germany, Austria, France, Italy, UK), U.S., and Switzerland.
