Latvia

This republic is an East European country. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea, Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. Riga is the capital city as well as its main port. The country's terrain is generally flat land.

Soon after Latvia broke away from Russia, its main focus was to privatize the state-run businesses. Today Latvia is a member state of the European Union. The service sector is the higher contributor to the national economy as compared to agriculture or industries. Since much of Latvia’s natural heritage has been carefully preserved, the country is keen to promote tourism as a main industry. Agricultural products include grains, potatoes, sugar beets, vegetables and dairy products. Livestock is reared. Because there is a sea next to it, fishing is also an industry and an occupation. The manufacturing industry produces buses, vans, railroad cars, agricultural machinery, washing machines, electronics, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, textiles, garments, processed foods and drinks. The economy of Latvia is however dependent on the import of energy.

The population of Latvia speaks Latvian also known as Lettish. The main religion is Lutheran. There are some Roman Catholics and a Russian Orthodox minority.

A traditional Latvian cuisine would normally include soups, rye bread, blood sausages and piragi (meat, bacon and onion pastries). The main course consist of meat (chicken, pork, veal and beef) or fish (including salmon and trout) with vegetables such as potatoes, beans, peas, cabbage, carrots, onions and mushrooms. Dairy products are always part of the Latvian diet. Beer is a traditional Latvian drink. People normally drink Coffee in the morning and tea in the evening.

Latvia has preserved its natural environment with great care. It has around two hundred nature reserves and restricted areas. There are many world heritage sites also in Latvia which are must-sees for tourists.
