This famous country in Southern Europe is surrounded by many exotic and famous lands and seas. You get to see many mountains and volcanoes when in Italy. For instance, in the north, there are the Alps which Italy shares with France, Austria and Switzerland. Vesuvius, the only active volcano in Europe is close to Naples and Etna on Sicily is one of the world's largest volcanoes.
Though Italy is traditionally an agro-based economy the renewed focus on industrialization after the Second World War has made Italy into one of the most industrialized nations of the world. Italian cars are also well known through out the world including Fiat and Ferrari. Exports of many food products, such as pasta, wine contribute substantially to the Italian economy. The rich cultural heritage and natural scenic beauty of the country draws tourists from all across the world and makes tourism a valuable resource for earnings.
The population consists of German, French and Slovene Italians and some Albanian and Greek Italians. Though Italian is the main language of Italy, German, French and Slovene is also spoken. Majority of Italians are Roman Catholics. Italy also has a small number of Jews.
While the Italian pasta and pizzas are popular through out the world, the desserts are equally popular. Italy is well known for its ice cream which is available in many different flavors. Other Italian desserts are zabaglione and tiramisu.
