Ireland
Ireland is an island lying in Western Europe. It is bound on the North, West and South by the Atlantic Ocean and on the East by the Irish Sea, on the North-East by the North Channel and on the South-East by St. Georges Channel. Ireland is divided into four provinces, which are again sub-divided into counties. Out of the 32 counties, six are ruled by Britain and the other 26 counties make up the Republic of Ireland.
While the main feature about Irish weather is the rain, the climate is usually mild, but fluctuates during winter. Ireland was formed as a result of volcanic eruptions and alternative episodes of heat and cold. The terrain of Ireland is diverse – from rocky Mountains, long stretches of grasslands, lakes, rivers and swamps. Winter in Ireland would mean thousands of white-fronted geese arriving from Greenland to rest on the banks of Wexford Reserves. While in Ireland, one should not miss the opportunity to visit two great monasteries. One is at Clonmacnoise on the banks of the Shannon in Offaly county. The other is Glendalough nesting in the magnificent setting of the Wicklow Mountains. Devastated many times over the past centuries, these sites remain great tourist attractions.
Ireland has agro-based economy, though in recent times, manufacturing and service sectors have become major contributors. A number of leading businesses based in Ireland are world leaders in their field. The most important industries are mining, steel, machinery, transport equipment, ship construction and refurbishment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, computer software, glass and crystal, clothing, textiles, dairy products, whiskey and brewing. Agricultural products are wheat, barley, potatoes, sugar beets and turnips. Tourism is getting a new focus in the country.
Most people in Ireland live in Dublin. The other cities in terms of population are Cork, Limerick and Galway. Ireland is a country of young people. More than half of the population is below 25 years of age. Though English is the main spoken language throughout Ireland, Gaelic is taught as a compulsory subject.
We have all heard of Irish whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueurs and Irish coffee, which are not only popular in Ireland but through out the world too. There are a large variety of restaurants and cafes through out Ireland offering a wide variety of menu including Irish soda bread, Barm Brack (yeast fruit bread), porter cake, Potato cakes and scones.
