Iceland

Reykjavik is the capital city of The Republic of Iceland. It is actually an island in the North Atlantic Ocean in Northern Europe. Its capital is also a major North Atlantic port. Interestingly, Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a mild coastal climate. Of special attraction is the period from the beginning of June until the middle of July, when the northern area of Iceland benefits from the "Midnight Sun" when the sky remains lighted at night. The phenomenon of the Northern Lights can be seen during mid-winter (November-December) when the weather is clear.

Fish dictates the cuisine of Iceland, as it is the country’s most important natural resource. Cod, herring, plaice and salmon are available aplenty and eaten in a variety of ways: baked, stewed, dried, salted, pickled and made into paté. Lamb, beef and pork are prepared using similar methods. Dairy products are considered to be important in the Icelandic diet. Over eighty varieties of cheese are produced. A milk curd called "skyr" is eaten as a dessert and also made into a drink similar to yoghurt. Brennivin, a very strong spirit, is the traditional Icelandic drink.

During the Second World War to protect Iceland from German occupation, British and later, American soldiers, occupied the island. In 1944 Iceland broke its ties with Denmark and declared itself the Republic of Iceland. In 1946 Iceland became a member of the United Nations and a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949. People in Iceland speak Icelandic, which is the official language. Majority of the people belong to the Lutheran Church of Iceland.

Fishing and agriculture have been the cornerstones of economy in Iceland. The service sector, especially the financial services and tourism has contributed significantly towards the economic welfare of the country. Nonetheless, Iceland has not applied for EU membership over fears that the country might lose control of fishing resources. Agricultural produce includes potatoes and dairy products. Main industries are fish processing, aluminum smelting, ferrosilicon production and geothermal power.
