At the end of the Second World War, the Russians defeated the Germans who were occupying Hungary. The country thus came under Soviet communist rule. It was in 1956, that a rebellious Hungarian government decided to leave the Eastern bloc, though the revolution was suppressed by Russian military forces. With the advent of Gorbachev’s reforms in 1985, on October 23 1989 Hungary was renamed the Republic of Hungary and in 1990 free elections were held. Gradually, Hungary began to develop close political and economic ties with the EU, and in 2004, became a full member state of the European Union.
Hungary is blessed with a fertile soil, with more than half of its land being arable. Agricultural products include wheat, maize, sunflower seeds, sugar beets, potatoes, other vegetables and dairy products. Poultry, pigs and cattle are reared. The primary industries are mining, metallurgy, construction materials, vehicles, electronics, chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, textiles and food processing.
Hungarian is the official language and over half of the people are Roman Catholics; the rest are Calvinists and Lutherans.
Hungarians love soups, sausages, smoked meat and pickles. The world knows about Hungarian meals consisting of Hungarian goulash, chicken paprika and stuffed cabbage. The main course consist of meat - chicken, goose, pork, beef, veal - or freshwater fish, with vegetables such as beets, cabbage, cucumbers, onions, potatoes and peppers. Important ingredients in Hungarian recipes are paprika, garlic and sour cream. Cakes, strudels, fruit soups, and pastas with curd cheese and sour cream are popular desserts. Fruits and nuts grown in Hungary are apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, almonds and hazelnuts. The nuts are added as accompaniments in many dishes.
