The later Greek architectural style, known is the Byzantine, is followed by numerous churches in the world.
The service sector, especially tourism, accounts for the majority of country’s earnings. Earnings from merchant shipping also play an important role in the economy. Traditionally though, Greece always had an agro-based economy. Crops include corn, barley, wheat, sugar beets, potatoes, tomatoes, olives, grapes, peaches, citrus, figs, pomegranates, cotton, tobacco, beef, dairy products and wine. Not just fish but also sponges – resources from the sea are also part of building an economy.
Greek food is essentially Mediterranean in flavor and famous the world over. It usually is made with tomatoes, olives, olive oil and grilled meat. Middle eastern influences can be seen in foods such as kebabs, pitta bread and houmous and in pastries such as baklava and kataifi. Moussaka, a dish of minced meat and aubergines, covered with béchamel sauce and feta, a salty sheep's milk, are Greek specialties. Greek wines are best known for their sweetness. Ouzo, an aniseed-flavored spirit, is usually drunk with water.
